There are few limits to the ways in which the Geographic Information sciences and related technologies (GIST) can contribute to the building of a new Afghanistan.

To reap the tremendous opportunities of GSIT in its post-conflict era, capacity-building efforts must balance the need for national labour to become technically skilled in geographic information technologies with the need for a broad education in geographic information science. Technical skills can meet immediate needs, but a broad education is essential for planning the Afghanistan of the future. Ongoing GIST capacity-building efforts lack such a broad vision.

The current GIST labour market in Afghanistan does not seem to demand or value a university...
