Metadata--data about data--metadata--are very important. Metadata allows us to understand the origin of the data, its geometric characteristics, its attributes, and what type of cartographic, digital image processing, or modeling has already been applied to the data. The Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata is now in place and there are working groups focused on how to improve the standard (FGDC, 1997b; 1998). Additional research should continue on: 1) how to organize, store, and serve metadata using regional National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse (NGDC) nodes; 2) development of improved web-based interfaces for efficiently browsing and downloading metadata; and 3) documenting the genealogy (lineage) of all of the operations that have been performed or...
