Redundancy 'worse than divorce or widowhood'
European Business Forum, Spring, 2005
Losing your job is worse than getting divorced or losing a loved one, a study claims. The unemployed are scarred for life, and even those who return to work often never recover previous levels of happiness. In contrast, those who are divorced or bereaved often do. The study, conducted by academics at Brunel University and others in the US and France, tracked the perceived annual mood swings of more than 24,000 people between 1984 and 1998.
It found that the longer someone is unemployed, the more severe the effect on their happiness.
