John Chambers of Cisco Systems Inc has proclaimed, "The fast will devour the big" in the communications revolution. The semiconductor industry appears to have proclaimed, "the fast will devour to grow big." Just look at Broadcom Corp's speed in acquiring SiByte, Silicon Spice, Pivotal Technologies, Stellar Semiconductor and 15 other companies going back to early 1999. Broadcom, AMCC, Conexant, PMC-Sierra, TranSwitch and others are clearly moving fast, using acquisitions to become big players. But which company will become the first "Cisco" of the system-on-chip (SoC) business?
