Shelby Coffey III walked into one tough situation when he accepted the position as president of CNN business news and CNNfn. The former editor and executive vice president of the Los Angeles Times took the executive post that had been empty since June, when popular anchor Lou Dobbs walked out after a series of battles with management.

He was also clearly the second choice, getting a crack only after Wall Street Journal managing editor Paul Steiger turned down the Job following a highly publicized courtship.
