Head of Fidelity adviser unit faces transition.

It's a good thing Ellyn McColgan is an optimist. As the newly appointed head of the group responsible for navigating Fidelity Investments' sometimes-tumultuous relationship with some 60,000 financial advisers affiliated with banks, insurance companies and broker-dealers, Ms. McColgan has one of the highest profiles among women in the mutual fund industry.

Ms. McColgan, who joined Fidelity in 1990, became president of financial intermediary services in March after her predecessor, Kevin J. Kelly, was tapped to head Fidelity's new brokerage unit. Ms. McColgan, 47, previously was president of Fidelity Investment Institutional Retirement Group. Ranked by Money magazine as one of the "50 Smartest Women in the Money Business" last year, Ms....
