A changing of guard at Schwab: Graves to leave post at adviser operation.

Gerald Graves, the man at Schwab Institutional whom many advisers consider their staunchest champion, is being moved out, but there may be a silver lining, analysts say.

Mr. Graves, 40, Schwab Institutional's chief operating officer since 2000, is relinquishing his role to help lead a new group at Charles Schwab Corp. aimed at gathering assets from larger corporations.

The turn of events marks the end of a sweeping changing of the guard at Schwab Institutional, which faces new challenges now that it has grown to about $230 billion in assets.

It puts Deborah D. McWhinney, 46, Schwab Institutional's new president, directly under the spotlight. Until now, she has shared power with Mr. Graves.
