'Polite disagreement' over a liability report. (Correspondence).

I did speak directly with Barry Lane at Unocal [Corp. of El Segundo, Calif.] just after the release of our report. We had some polite disagreement about the report and its findings, and I see that some of his views made their way into your [Aug.5] story ["Another Fine Mess: Who pays this tab?"].

Just for the record, I would take exception with some of his points, as follows: Our "vague generalizations" are in fact the result of detailed analysis of well-documented data sources. As explained and referenced in the report, we compared information on environmentally sensitive areas and the distribution of company reserves as the basis for assessing company exposure. The idea that sparsely populated areas can't be environmentally sensitive...
