About half of investors polled recently believed erroneously that stock market losses are insured, while 70% were unaware of the risks of buying stocks on margin. These were among the findings of a survey by NASD, which announced the creation of an investor education foundation with initial funding of $10 million.

NASD officials said additional money will come from fines it levies on brokerage firms and individuals for disciplinary breaches. "Investors realize they need to be better educated, both about basic investing and the different investing products available,'' said Robert Glauber, NASD chairman and CEO.
