Bush should press Social Security fight.(Editorial)

President Bush, during his press conference last week, in effect challenged Congress to act now to fix Social Security. Congress must rise to the challenge, but the chances of getting significant reform remain slight. Without a Herculean effort by the Bush administration, and a loud public demand for reform of the system, or a miracle, nothing much will happen in this Congress, other than more hearings.

That isn't just our opinion. Former Sen. John Breaux, D-La., who was chairman of the Senate subcommittee on Social Security and family policy, told a conference in Los Angeles late last month that the chances of Social Security reform at this time are slim.
