For the nine months, BP's pro forma earnings were a record $10,974 million compared to $10,113 million a year ago. Third quarter pro forma earnings, adjusted for special items, were $3,049 million compared to $3,796 million a year ago. For the third quarter, earnings per share (ADS) were $1.01 compared to $0.81 a year ago. For the nine months, earnings per share were $2.93 compared to $2.84 a year ago.
The company's return on average capital employed, on a pro forma basis, adjusted for special items, was 21 % for the nine month period. Our nine month hydrocarbon production increased 6% versus the same period in 2000. The quarterly dividend increased 4.8% to $0.33 per ADS compared to $0.315 a year ago, up 9.5% on last year.
