Deere drops ATV lineup.(NEWS & NOTES)

John Deere will exit the ATV business.

In a July 28 press release, Deere said it has not achieved an "acceptable level of profitability" with ATVs.

There will be no layoffs at Deere because the ATVs were manufactured by Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP.)

BRP began making ATVs for Deere in 2002. That relationship was severed in May 2005, due to low demand. A BRP spokesman said there would be no layoffs.

Bill Klutho, a manager of public relations with Deere, said that when the company entered the ATV market, it worked with BRP to produce a work-oriented ATV. "Unfortunately, we didn't achieve the market penetration or profitability we had hoped for," he said.
