Telecom Italia Buys Majority Ownership Of Med-1.(Brief Article)(Statistical Data Included)

Telecom Italia the sixth largest telecommunication firm in the world, quietly increased its ownership in the Israeli company Med-1 to 52 percent of the outstanding shares of the company. Telecom Italia purchased an additional 29 percent of Med-1 shares for an undisclosed price from several Israeli shareholders.

Med-1 owns a 2600-kilometer undersea fiber optic network that connects Israel, Cyprus and Italy. The network has been operational since March 1999 and with the growth in fiber optic data telecommunications traffic, Telecom Italia is expected to assume a leading role in a new project to expand the network to Turkey and Greece.
