The workstation war is on MAYNARD, MA--The recent introduction of Digital Equipment Corp's first desktop workstation based on reduced-instruction-set-computing (RISC)--the DECstation 3100--confirms what analysts have been predicting for some time: The war is on in the workstation market. And the real winners of the battle could be engineers, who will get more powerful workstations for lower prices.

Many industry analysts regard DEC's aggressive pricing and performance stance with the 3100 as the "shot heard 'round the world" in the battle for the technical workstation market.
