In pursuit of computer security Even before last November's Arpanet virus attack attracted national attention, the Department of Defense (DoD) and the intelligence community had put the computer industry on notice that its computer security requirements were due to broaden. After an October meeting between the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Institute of Computer Science and Technology and the National Computer Security Center (NCSC), a branch of the National Security Administration (NSA), the two organizations announced their support of DoD guidelines that call for the use of computer systems that provide some control over access to sensitive data by 1992.
