32-bit chip emulation gets easier Select 32-bit IC suppliers are making it easier to emulate their processors by adding on-chip breakpoint registers, breakpoint pins, background modes, and other features. Immediately, these features will ease the simultaneous development of [mu]P- and microcontroller-based hardware and software.

Ultimately, in-circuit emulators, debuggers, and other development tools could get cheaper. Still, some IC makers aren't convinced that on-chip features are worth it. Spokesmen for Bipolar Integrated Technology (Beaverton, OR), which last month introduced a 32-bit ECL [mu]P, say users can effectively emulate complex [mu]Ps via enhanced emulation software. IC makers to agree there is a problem to be solved, however. ...
