ASIC makers step up software support Three major ASIC suppliers have introduced design software suites that employ third-party and proprietary tools linked by a common user interface and operating protocol. Back-end data management differs, as does device support. Furthermore, you're locked into the list of tools each vendor endorses unless you're buying in large volumes.

All suppliers say they'll incorporate proprietary tools under certain circumstances. In endorsing the tool sets, Fujitsu Microelectronics Inc (San Jose, CA), Harris Semi-conductor Corp (Melbourne, FL), and Motorola Inc (Phoenix, AZ) join pioneer ASIC makers LSI Logic and VLSI Technology, which already offer such software suites.
