Surge in cellular-system development spurs hiring Telecommunicaions companies the world over are developing the next generation of cellular telephone systems: mobile phones and networks based on digital rather than analog technology. To engineers, the effort means jobs. In this country, sizable R&D efforts are being mounted by three telecommunications giants--Motorola (Arlington Heights, IL), AT&T Bell Laboratories (Whippany, NJ), Northern Telecom (Richardson, TX)--and others.
