Defense-related AI: a booming field? For EEs with artificial-intelligence (AI) or expert-systems development experience, there appears to be good news coming from the defense sector: Not only is the use of AI in defense laboratories becoming commonplace, but the demand for AI skills has also grown steadily for the last five years, and it has become even stronger in the last year.

In addition, unlike most defense-related hiring projections, which tend to revolve around specific contract awards, a significant portion of research in the AI and expert-systems area is funded with internal R&D monies, rather than with specific contract awards.
