Open compression scheme nears for 1/4-in. tape drives Plans to standardize on one data-compression algorithm for 1/4-in. tape drives may be scrapped in favor of a more open approach.

This week's proposal from Norwegian tape-drive manufacturer Tandberg Data A/S calls for the Quarter-Inch Cartridge (QIC) Committee's data-compression physical format to be changed to include a registry scheme, which would allow manufacturers and users to choose from a variety of existing algorithms.

The QIC Committee has been reviewing Pasadena, CA-based STAC Inc's proposed algorithm as a possible industry standard. The committee has been reluctant to officially endorse it, however, because it is a proprietary scheme.
