Mac portable challenges card makers CUPERTINO, CA--Several companies that have engineered networking boards for the Macintosh II, Macintosh SE, and Macintosh SE30 are turning thumbs down to Apple's September-released Macintosh portable. They cite space, power, and configuration limitations as main obstacles.

"The portable is a totally different system. The only common thread [with other Macintosh machines] is the Apple name," says Jim Nealon, project manager at Dove Computer Corp (Wilmington, NC), which designed an Ethernet card for the SE and other Macintosh enhancements. Developing an Ethernet card for the portable, he says, "is not going to be that easy, and we're not convinced it can be done."
