10base-T chair: OK to use early silicon; three makers plan single-chip transceiver/LAN controllers. (the 10base-T proposed IEEE twisted-pair Ethernet implementation)

EDN, January, 1990 by Martin, S. Louis

10base-T chair: OK to use early silicon Intel Corp will today announce transceiver and adapter support for 10base-T, the proposed twisted-pair Ethernet implementation still in IEEE committee. At least three other chip makers--Advanced Micro Devices (Sunnyvale, CA), National Semiconductor (Santa Clara, CA), and Western Digital (Irvine, CA)--will wait until a working document is approved to release silicon.

AT&T's Bell Laboratories (Reading, PA) is also developing 10base-T-compatible components. A digital phase-locked loop with a 16-stage delay line and 3.125-nsec phase steps from a 10-MHz clock will be discussed at ISSCC next month. Intel implements some of its logic in an EPLD to handle any possible changes. Results of a ballot that could...
