National launches next-gen FDDI set SANTA CLARA, CA--Though not yet completely available, a 5-part FDDI chip set unveiled this week by National Semiconductor Corp kicks off the second generation of FDDI devices. The set will have plenty of company by the year's end.

FDDI chip set pioneer Advanced Micro Devices (Austin, TX) will have samples of a 3-chip set next month and be in full production before 1991. AT&T Microelectronics (Berkeley Heights, NJ) should announce the first monolithic PHY chip in a month or so. And Motorola (Austin, TX) should announce a complete set sometime late in the third quarter.
