Reed-Solomon gains favor MILPITAS, CA--IC maker Cirrus Logic Inc earlier this week brought Reed-Solomon error correction to PC/XT/AT disk control, furthering the 88-bit correction scheme's foothold in disk-drive control. Similar products are imminent. Adaptec Inc (Milpitas, CA), which introduced a SCSI disk control IC with Reed-Solomon error correction in March, plans later this summer to unveil a midrange single-chip controller family that will also incorporate the scheme, according to Dennis Van Dalsen, marketing manager for the company's peripheral products operation.

And Western Digital (Irvine, CA) officials say their company is investigating the incorporation of the scheme onto its drive-control chips. Similarly, LSI Logic (Milpitas, CA)...
