A manager's nightmare: firing an employee As government contract dollars dry up and international competition grows, economic pressures are forcing companies to downsize. As a result, many engineering managers are facing mandates to cut back personnel. PErhaps even more difficult for the manager is firing an employee for poor performance.

Whatever the reason, firing is stressful, is probably inevitable, and must be handled with extreme care.
