EDN, November, 1990 by Forkner, Leslie

More communications controllers gain on-chip protocols The word in communication controller ICs is "integration"--of physical functions and, lately, of the Babel of protocols needed to handle multiple networks. This next level of integration is the subject of some controversy, however, as at least one manufacturer questions whether design flexibility is sacrificed by implementing protocols on chip.

Available controllers that putprotocols on chip range from front-end processors, which handle only elementary frame-grabbing, to general-purpose communications processor, which handle upper-level network interfacing.
