Though scarce last year while the standard endured minor modifications, 10base-T Ethernet chips are now available from many vendors. Furthermore, once-reticent suppliers are now willing to talk about future products, including plans for single-chip implementations of the standard.

A supplement to Ethernet standard IEEE 802.3, 10base-T (10-Mbit Baseband Twisted Pair) governs the use of twisted-pair cable in Ethernet local area networks (LANs) and officially became part of the standard last September, says Patricia Thaler, chairperson of the 802.3 Ethernet committee and a principal engineer at Hewlett-Packard Co (Palo Alto, CA).
