ANAHEIM, CA--Image compression technology, long plagued by a hodgepodge of proprietary implementations, received a boost towards standardization at Imaging/West '91 as vendors introduced a large number of hardware and software products that support the JPEG standard. Within the hardware camp, boards using general purpose digital signal processors (DSP) seem to be preferred over those which used dedicated compression chips.

Those who opted for DSP solutions tended toward multiple chip implementations. Software-only approaches, and there were plenty at the show, are less expensive than hardware compression and are flexible. However, performance depends on the speed of the host CPU for performance.
