SANTA CLARA, CA--Microprocessor and software vendors previously content to focus on general-purpose computer makers will face off at next week's Embedded Systems Conference here. Although numerous 16- and 32-bit processor designs will be introduced, the focus will be on software and related development tools.

Both sides of the processor-architecture debate agree that high-level language programming is on the rise. Specifically, vendors report, languages such as C are becoming common even on 8- and 16-bit prts, and are a necessity on larger 32-bit processors.
