FREMONT, CA--Cirrus Logic this week joins a host of IC makers adding voice capability to modem chip sets that transmit data and facsimile in notebook personal computer, voice mail, and other applications. A lack of standard software command sets for voice-transmission functions, though, may delay acceptance by modem designers and their customers.
Chip vendors basically all begin with a digital signal processr (DSP) in their quest to implement voice, but there the similarity ends. The data-crunching capabilities of these commnications ICs lead some to call them "data pumps."
