SUNNYVALE, CA--The Am79C960 PCnet-ISA controller is primarily intended to aid designers moving Ethernet local-area-network (LAN) functions onto motherboards. The $19.75 (10,000) 10-Base-T device targets highly integrated desktop, notebook, and server systems, but it can also reside on adapter boards that employ the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) bus.

The AMD controller integrates a 10-Base-T transceiver, an 802.3 Media Access Controller (MAC) core, and encoder/decoder circuitry.

High integration means that the PCnet-ISA has an estimated system cost of $24.40 for a motherboard and $28.34 for an adapter card, according to Andy Robin, operations director at the AMD...
