IC acts as JPEG image-compression coprocessor. (LSI Logic's L64702 JPEG) (Joint Photographic Experts Group) (EDN-Processor Update) (Product Announcement)

EDN, March, 1993 by Quinnell, Richard A.

System designs utilizing compressed images need more than an image-compression core to get the job done. Memory and system interfaces, color-space conversion, and data buffering must all be included. The L64702 JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) coprocessor provides all these functions in a single chip.

The device handles image data at a rate of 8.5 Mbytes/sec using a 33-MHz clock, which is sufficient to process an 8.5 x 11-in., 300-dpi full-color image in less than 4 sec. For video images, that data rate translates into a 1/4-screen, 240 x 352-pixel image at 30 frames/sec. It compresses and decompresses images according to the baseline sequential JPEG algorithm in accordance with the ISO/IEC DIS 109181 standard.

The video memory-control...
