Philips Semiconductor's 5.1-channel Thunderbird Avenger SAA7785 PCI audio-accelerator IC brings home-theater audio to PCs. Philips based the device on a programmable DSP controller employing algorithms from QSound Labs. These algorithms can create virtual 3-D from stereo sources and eliminate the need for crosstalk cancellation, resulting in a wide "sweet spot" for strong positional perception. The device also supports two- and four-channel and headphone virtualization.

The Thunderbird Avenger can output AC-3 data from a DVD directly to an AC-3 decoder via its Sony/Philips digital interface (SPDIF) port or allow users to connect to a variety of consumer audio equipment. Application-programming-interface support includes DirectSound3D (DS3D), EAX 1.0/2.0,...
