PWM supply-controller IC adds high-voltage FET.(Maxim Integrated Products MX5003)(Brief Article)(Product Announcement)

EDN, December, 1999 by Schweber, Bill

For applications such as line-voltage-based supplies for nonmobile telecomm and datacomm installations, the MAX5003 PWM power-supply controller from Maxim Integrated Products integrates a high-voltage FET on-chip. In a typical application, the $1.79 (1000) device operates in isolated or nonisolated flyback and feed-forward voltage-mode dc/dc converters supplying voltages such as 5, 42, or 248V dc. The 16-pin IC operates at a switching frequency as high as 300 kHz, using an input voltage of 11 to 110V and provides a [ or -] 2.5%-accurate reference voltage. The 110V start-up transistor of the device, along with preregulator and feed-forward compensation circuitry, combine to enhance the controller's efficiency and speed its line-transient response.
