With the release of Revision 1.0 of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance specification, vendors now have a framework for developing interoperable networking components to try to tap the ubiquitous power line. The specification for 14-Mbps systems allows PCs, peripherals, and other information appliances to interconnect; products complying with the standard will be available in stores by fall 2001. Note that HomePlug competes with other home-network alternatives, such as the IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi standard (www.bluetooth. org).
