AS ALTERA'S STRATIX TARGETS XILINX'S Virtex-II FPGAs, Xilinx has Altera in its sights, too. Xilinx is shipping samples, roughly a year later than it originally planned, of its Virtex-II Pro FPGAs with embedded microprocessor cores (see "Routing revamp highlights FPGA refresh" EDN, March 7, 2002, pg 22 and "EDN's first annual programmable-logic directory," EDN, Aug 17, 2000, pg 54). The company joins competitors Altera (www. altera.com), Atmel (www. atmel.com), QuickLogic (www. quicklogic.com) and Triscend (www.ibm.com) CoreConnect bus standard.
