THE WINTER HOLIDAY SHOPPING SEASON might seem far away, but computer vendors are now defining and designing their product offerings for it. To avoid being left out in the cold, graphics-chip suppliers have begun a blizzard of introductions.
ATI Technologies is now shipping its next-generation chips after acting as the demo vehicle for id Software's Doom 3 unveiling at May's E3 Expo. Radeon 9000 is a lithography-reduced and therefore less expensive variant of the Radeon 8500. By shifting video-processing functions away from dedicated logic and onto the enhanced pixel-shader processors, ATI can implement additional capabilities, such as postdecoding deblocking and other lossy-compression-artifact-suppression functions.
