VERSION 9 OF MICROSOFT'S WINDOWS MEDIA algorithms, which the company announced at last fall's Streaming Media East show, are now available for public beta testing. Audio enhancements include both dual-channel, Consumer and surround, Professional lossy codecs, along with a lossless-audio codec for degradation-free archival purposes. Variable-bit-rate lossy encoding makes optimum use of the available download bandwidth and storage capacity. An enhanced speech codec dynamically alters its characteristics when it senses music in the mix--during commercials, for example--for improved quality at narrowband streaming bit rates.
