In this period of falling piececounts, there has been a great deal of emphasis on installing incentive systems for staffers, in hopes of boosting productivity and lowering costs. Users of these systems also hope to relieve owners and managers of some day-to-day supervisory responsibilities. The results are not always as good as one expects.

Incentive systems are supposed to motivate staffers to improve their performance, resulting in more money for employee and company alike. But if there's any chance of achieving these goals, incentive systems must be designed properly. It's management's responsibility to provide a solid foundation for an incentive system.
