Second sentenced for waste mishandling.(TALK OF THE TRADE)

American Drycleaner, March, 2006

Behzad Kahoolyzadeh was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison and asked to pay $1.29 million in cleanup costs for conspiracy to improperly store and transport hazardous drycleaning wastes, the Justice Department announced recently. Kahoolyzadeh pleaded guilty in 2004 to the charges.

The defendant was affiliated with Vernon, Calif.-based AAD Distribution & Dry Cleaning Services Inc. (AAD), one of the state's largest waste handlers until its shutdown in 2001. In order to hide permit violations, Kahoolyzadeh and his partners conspired to ship and store perc wastes offsite at unlicensed facilities. Co-defendant and former AAD vice president Hormoz Pourat is serving an identical sentence.
