10 YEARS AGO. Marcia Miller asks drycleaners to "lighten up" in this month's Over The Counter. With new government regulations, environmental paperwork and negative comments from the media, cleaners across the country feel like they're being picked on.
Miller says cleaners should put their problems in perspective, reminding them that other small businesses have suffered similar hardships. One is the service-station industry, where operators have already been forced to make costly renovations or go out of business by environmental regulations. "Every community in the country bears the scars of sites that have been closed and can't be sold," she says.
