Cooling do's and don'ts.

Dairy Today, May, 2005

* When building new barns or lots, keep facility orientation, eave height and ridge openings foremost in mind.

* Cheaper usually means less effective cooling.

* Ensure rest areas, whether under shades or in freestalls, remain dry and comfortable.

Lactating, dry cows and calves up to six months can become seriously heat stressed at just 85[degrees]F. Dennis Armstrong, University of Arizona research scientist emeritus, offers these guidelines.

Freestall barns

Do: Orient barns east to west, with an eave height of 14' and a ridge opening of 24". Roof pitch should be 4:1 or 3:1.

Don't: Pitch roofs 2.5:1 or less with California design, or eave heights less than 12'.
