Rick Smith named DFA CEO.

(December 8, 2005) In a move that surprised no one, the Dairy Farmers of America Board of Directors named Rick Smith as president and CEO effective January 1.

Smith succeeds Gary Hanman, 71, who retires on that same day. Smith currently serves as DFA's president and chief operating officer.

Smith started his career in the dairy industry in 1982, when he joined Dairylea Cooperative in New York as vice president and general counsel. In just six years, he was named Dairylea CEO.

While there, he instituted innovative business practices and member relations that focused on equitable treatment of members, recognizing that larger herds had different business needs than smaller herds.
