Producers see red in Bush budget.

(February 9, 2006) Now that dairy producers have had time to digest President Bush's 2007 budget proposal, few like what they see.

"If the package was voted on today, dairy farmers and farmers across commodity groups would be in serious trouble," says Tom Camerlo, chairman of Dairy Farmers of America and a dairy producer from Florence, Colo.

Camerlo takes issue with the 5% budget reduction when agricultural programs account for only 1% of the Federal budget. He says further "tilt" adjustments to the dairy price support program would cut even deeper.

He also calls the 3cents/cwt tax on milk production "very troubling," coming at a time when dairy producers are already battling high fuel, utility and feed...
