Technological advances in cowside somatic cell count (SCC) testing promise to give dairy producers new tools for detecting subclinical mastitis, establishing screening and segregation programs and making individual cow treatment and culling decisions.

"These tests represent the first new technology to be introduced to the market since the California Mastitis Test (CMT) was introduced more than 40 years ago," says University of Wisconsin veterinarian Pam Ruegg.

Ruegg recently wrapped up research comparing SCCs from two cowside tests currently on the market-the PortaSCC and Direct Cell Counter-to traditional laboratory counts. She found no significant difference between lab results and the cowside test results. "Bottom...
