As reported in this month's By the Numbers (see page 6), the infant developmental toy segment continues to grow. About 65% of specialty store owners surveyed said they carried the toys, and these items are a constant at mass retailers. As the category expands, so do the options. Children can learn to develop their senses through DVDs, music CDs, tiny computer keyboards and the like. But for babies and toddlers, a soft toy still does the trick. Crinkles, rattles, squeaks and texture can help little ones explore most of their senses as well as improve their motor skills and cognitive thinking. And unlike more high-tech options, these toys are huggable as well as educational.
