U.S. STOCK FUNDS are categorized by investment style. For more on investment style, see page 72. Among the most useful statistics on these pages are the columns showing the year-by-year decile rank of each fund within its investing style. In other words, a fund ranked 1 in '05 for total return was in the top 10% of funds in that category, and a rank of 10 means it was in the bottom 10%. Decile ranking can be meaningful because funds within one investment style tend to be hot or cold at the same time.

To be included, a fund must have at least a one-year record and usually at least $218 million in assets.
