ON THE PAGES that follow are our exclusive rankings of more than 2,500 stock and bond mutual funds. Details and definitions of the criteria we use are explained below. But first, a quick overview to explain how to use the data to your advantage.
Most people will focus on the columns showing annualized total returns for the past one, three, five and ten years. This is important information, but perhaps not the most important. There are four other signposts of a good fund:
Decile rank. How well did a mutual fund fare relative to similar funds year by year over the past half decade? Consistently above-average results (5 or lower on a scale of 1 to 10) usually lead to superior long-term returns--and cause investors less aggravation than more-erratic...
