WHEN WE TALK SHOP at Kiplinger's Personal Finance, as often as not the subject comes around to mutual funds. In the course of a year, we talk to hundreds of fund managers--over the phone, at their offices or in ours. We get to know who's hot and who's not. We're active investors, too, and our money is at stake in funds, just like yours is.

So when it came time to sweat the list down to the 15 funds whose managers we admire most, the discussion got intense. We agreed that these had to be funds you could invest in directly and that they had to be open to new investors. Everything else was up for debate, and did we ever.
