THE PAST YEAR DEMONSTRATED once again the importance of owning the right mutual funds. The stock market--as represented by Standard & Poor's 500-stock index--advanced a modest 5%. Most U.S. stock funds did better, and some did a lot better but without taking undue risks with their shareholders' money. In other words, last year was a stock-picker's market, which rewarded fund managers who could identify companies with improving business fundamentals.
